In the summer of 2013, a boy shipped off to Fort Benning for his Basic Training with determination in his eyes and a few belongings in his rucksack. Little did he know, he also embarked on the love story of his life.
At the same time, a girl started college at Rowan University. She drove to Jersey bright-eyed, bushy-tailed and ready for adventure.
The common denominator in their lives? A letter.
A soldier in the same unit as the boy had written letters back home to his cousin, the girl, and she told him she wanted an additional pen pal. For weeks, she begged to be “set-up” with one of his buddies, to no avail. Then, a letter came.
“Uh, hi! Fox gave me your name… or as I think you know him, Cameron? Haha anyways, hi! How are you?”
The boy’s first letter encompassed all he was – charming, funny, God-fearing, passionate, athletic, (sexy), loving and more. At once, the girl wrote back.
And then forgot to mail the two letters she wrote.
Their story could have ended there, but with a little guidance from God and some stamps from the post office, the letters were sent.
In Georgia, the boy waited for a response. After a few weeks, he’d chalked his chance letter up to a loss and moved on. Not a day later did Cameron deliver two letters to his bunk, already opened and proofread.
By the time he got his letters from the girl, the boy was leaving his station and off to another, where mail wouldn’t be received. He did, however, get to use his phone.
“Could you teach me some skating moves?” A text from an unknown number appeared on the girl’s phone as she readied herself for a Halloween party.
“Who is this?” she replied immediately.
“Private Betterton,” he shot back.
All at once, her world changed. She knew, first from his letter, then from his text, she wasn’t alone in the world anymore.
The two communicated non-stop from that point on. Three weeks after the first text, the boy drove two hours to meet this crazy, silly girl he felt he had known for eons.
Butterflies fluttered in her stomach as she made her way across campus to meet him for the first time.
He saw her first.
Curled hair, bright colors and an incandescently happy smile was all he saw before he felt the force of her hug and the warmth of her lips on his.
From that moment, they became inseparable. While separated by distance, they were never far apart. With every chance they got, they would talk, text or be in each others arms, because nothing in the world felt as good as being whole with each other.
The couple faced challenges from both internal and external forces. Arguments, prolonged distance and drama attempted to weaken the pair, but they always came out stronger on the other side.
Nearly three years later, the pair stands in very different positions than where they started. While the boy still serves in the National Guard, God’s purpose for his life has been revealed and he works every day to be one step closer to be a doctor. The girl, no longer a bright-eyed, bushy-tailed freshman, readies herself for graduation and life in the “real” world. Most importantly, their stories weave ever closer to each other. On October 9, 2016, Lucas Miles Betterton proposed to Katarina Aleea DeFelice, and the two affirmed their commitment to live, grow and love together for the rest of their days.
The pair are ready for their life to begin, together. Get ready for the best day ever June 8, 2018, because this love story is coming to life. Follow their wedding specifics with the category #BETTERbyaTON on the blog, or Katti’s social media accounts!
